Pre-2020, the argument for building in San Francisco was real: proximity to other founders, VCs on Sand Hill Road, engineers who could walk between companies, and the informal information flow of a concentrated community.

The bet was that geography would give you better access to talent, capital, and ideas than a distributed team.

The bet paid off. for a specific era.

What Changed

2020–2021 forced remote work on companies that would never have chosen it. The experiment ran at scale. The results were unambiguous: distributed teams with strong async culture were as productive or more productive than co-located teams.

The engineers figured this out before the companies did. The best engineers moved. to quieter cities, to countries with lower costs, to homes with larger offices. And they did not accept lower salaries to do it.

The talent is now everywhere. The question is whether your hiring process can reach it.
